Summary
This one-day course is designed for anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of the nature and extent of drug use in society today. No prior knowledge is required.
This course has previously been attended by non specialist drug and alcohol workers who wanted to gain some knowledge in a new area as well as specialist drug and alcohol workers who wanted to update their knowledge.

Drug using trends are changing. Polysubstance use is increasingly the norm amongst drug users. It’s not just the drugs they choose that are changing, but how they choose them, where they buy them and what they want and expect from services that support them.

The course covers:
- An overview of the current drug strategy and the recovery agenda
- The nature and extent of drug use in society today; including Alcohol, Mephedrone, Cocaine, Cannabis, Ketamine, Legal Highs and Heroin
- An understanding of the commonly used drugs and their effects
- The Bio-Psycho-Social Model - a model for understanding the drug experience
- An opportunity to reflect on your attitudes towards drug use and drug users
Provides underpinning knowledge towards the following DANOS units:
AA1: Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists.
AD1: Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects
