Hidden Harm
This course is for all those who come into contact with adults who may be using drugs or alcohol problematically or with young people.

It is concerned with the impact of parental (or carer) drug and alcohol use on the children they care for.
A recent survey for BBC Newsround Click Here for Details found that a third of children are scared by parents drinking.
Meanwhile parents using drugs have continued to cause controversy in the press with the arrival of Project Prevention offering to pay drug users to be sterilised (See a recent Guardian article here)
This course looks at what the evidence says and offers some practical approaches for those who come into contact with drugs and alcohol using parents to know how to respond to reduce the harm to children.

A key strand of the Government’s Drug Strategy: 'Drugs: protecting families and communities' – 2008’ is preventing harm to children, young people and families affected by drug misuse. The new coalition government has indicated that it is concerned by the impact of parental drug use. This course will give you a chance to explore the issues and know what you can do to help.
The course covers:
- Understanding the extent of harm to children caused by parental substance use
- Understanding the policy context and evidence base of ‘Hidden Harm’
- Understanding the importance of multidisciplinary working to reduce the harm of substance use to children
- Know how to recognise indications of problematic substance use and its impact on children
- Know how raise the issue of substance use and parenting
