Hidden Harm Awareness - Working with Substance Using Parents
(2 day course) 25th & 26th January 2010, The Source, Sheffield, South Yorkshire
A key strand of the new Government’s Drug Strategy: 'Drugs: protecting families and communities' – 2008 is preventing harm to children, young people and families affected by drug misuse. Parental problem drug use can and does cause serious harm to children at every age from conception to adulthood.
If you work with adults who may be using substances and caring for children, you need to attend this training, so you are equipped to prevent this harm.
Provides underpinning knowledge towards the following DANOS units:
AB2 Support individuals who are substance users
HSC35 Promote choice, well-being and the protection of all individuals
HSC47 Help parents and carers to acquire and use skills to protect and take care of their children and young people
Cost: £180 +VAT per person

The course covers:
- An understanding of the extent of harm to children caused by parental substance use
- An understanding of the Hidden Harm policy context
- An understanding of the importance of effective treatment for adult substance users in reducing harm to children
- An understanding of the importance of multidisciplinary working to reduce the harm of substance use to children
- An understanding of how to raise the issue of parenting whilst maintaining engagement with the service
- An understanding of to actively support parents and carers to develop the skills they need to care for and protect the children in their care
- An understanding of how to incorporate parenting interventions into your work with adults
