Hidden Harm - Children Affected by Parental Substance Use

A key strand of the Government’s Drug Strategy is preventing harm to children, young people and families affected by drug misuse. Problematic drug and alcohol use by parents can and does cause serious harm to children at every age from conception to adulthood. All professionals who might encounter the children of drug users need to understand these issues.
This course may also be of interest to people working with adults who would like to know more about the impact of parental drug and alcohol use on children and young people.
This training will provide you with the knowledge and some skills to respond to and prevent harm to the children of substance misusing parents.
Provides underpinning knowledge towards the following DANOS units:
HSC35 Promote choice, well-being and the protection of all individuals
AB7: Provide services to those affected by someone else’s substance use
HSC233: Relate to, and interact with, individuals
HSC3111: Promote the equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of individuals
HSC335: Contribute to the protection of individuals from harm and abuse
HSC33: Reflect on and develop your practice

The extent of harm to children caused by parental substance use
The Hidden Harm policy context.
The importance of effective treatment for adult substance users in reducing harm to children.
The importance of multidisciplinary working to reduce the harm of substance use to children.
Raising the issue of parental substance use with children and young people.
The impact of parental substance use on children.
The range of explanations for substance use and how different explanations may be appropriate for children at different stages of development.
Some interventions for supporting children and young people affected by parental substance use.
An opportunity to reflect on hidden harm issues and your role in responding to hidden harm.
