Identification & Brief Advice
Summary
This one-day course is designed to equip non-alcohol specialist workers with the skills to effectively deliver Identification and Brief Advice to promote the safer use of alcohol.
Prior knowledge is required. You will need to have a good understanding of alcohol and its effects. Our Alcohol Awareness course will give you this understanding if you don't already have it.
Did You Know
Most alcohol-related harm is caused by excessive drinkers whose consumption exceeds recommended drinking levels, but is not yet dependent – think of your local town or city on a Friday or Saturday night. One way to reduce consumption levels and reduce harm in a community can be to offer brief interventions.
Brief interventions involve offering simple brief advice, usually by non-alcohol specialist in a general setting e.g. housing services/probation/jobcentre plus, and only take a few minutes to complete.
Offering opportunistic brief interventions in general settings can bring about positive change at both an individual and population level.
If you work with people who could benefit from simple brief interventions around their alcohol use then this is the course for you.
The course covers:
- A brief recap of the physical, psychological and social effects of alcohol, including the risks of hazardous and harmful drinking
- The current guidance around safer alcohol use
- An understanding of the effectiveness of IBA
- An exploration of the recommended alcohol screening tools
- The interventions required to offer brief advice to support safer drinking
