Mephedrone & The 'Legal Highs' Phenomenon

Summary

We have designed this course as a result of numerous requests from our colleagues, working in both adult and young people’s services. The drug scene in the UK has and is continuing to change, with evidence of increasing use of ‘legal highs’.

The Government has controlled some former ‘legal highs’ such as BZP (Benzylpiperazine) and related piperazines, and synthetic cannabinoids under MDA in December 2009. From 16th April 2010, Mephedrone (MCat) has been a Class B drug; and Naphyrone (NRG) was made class B on 23rd July 2010, So the 'Legal Highs' name for this course is sort of getting a bit out dated. However, the legal highs phenomenom will not go away and people still need to know about those substances that have been made illegal as well as those such as BenzoFury & Ivory Wave that are still legal - for now.

There is limited information currently available relating to 'legal highs', in terms of long term effects but we feel it is vital that workers have access to what we do know. It is also important to consider how to approach working with 'legal high' users in the face of limited evidence.

This course is suitable for people working with young people or adults.

The course covers:

What are 'legal highs'?
The effects of using legal highs
The risks of use
The current law and how this may change in the future
How to approach working with legal high users (i.e. harm reduction in the face of limited information)
Clarification about the aspects of legal high drug use we cannot yet be sure about
An opportunity to reflect on the issues of legal highs and your role in responding to the use of legal highs

Provides underpinning knowledge towards the following DANOS units:

AB2 Support individuals who are substance users
AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists
AD1 Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects
HSC33 Reflect on and develop your practice
