Young People & Drug Use; Screening and Referral
Summary
This one day course is suitable for a range of professionals who come into contact with young people, such as youth support workers, school or college support staff, childrens centre workers, housing workers, connexions workers and community workers.
Drugs and alcohol use by young people has and is continuing to change.
This course will help you to understand the types of drugs young people use and why they use them.

Underage drinkers consume approximately the equivalent of 6.9 million pints of beer or 1.7 million bottles of wine each week with an estimated 630,000 11- to 17-year-olds drinking twice or more per week

There is increasing evidence of young people now using substances, such as, ketamine, GHB, steroids and a range of legal highs

Of those who begin to use cannabis in their early teens, the risk of developing problem use may be as high as one in six.

The nature and extent of substance use amongst young people

The role of universal young people’s services in providing support for
substance use issues -
The factors that increase the vulnerability of young people through their own or others substance use

Screening for substance misuse

When to involve other agencies and the process of referral

How to provide some basic substance related advice and information to young people
Provides underpinning knowledge towards the following DANOS units:
AA1: Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists
HSC330: Support individuals to access and use services and facilities
AD1: Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects
